Our hunting dogs also play a large role in making Ringneck Retreat a place for incredible hunts. Darik’s first lab, Duke, helped start his guide service years ago, and now Ringneck Retreat has six dogs expertly trained to accompany hunters. Each breed has its own style, and each dog has its own personality. As each of our dogs offers a different hunting experience, Darik will custom match a dog to each hunter or group. Ringneck Retreat also welcomes your own hunting dog(s) as well.
We treat our dogs with the same admiration and respect as our human hunting buddies. If you join one of our hunting expeditions, you’re sure to meet them. We train each hunting dog in the intricate skills of pointing and retrieving, and, unlike most dogs, our much–loved dogs, benefit from exploring a 2500–acre prime hunting ground every day.
Ringo. A three–year–old, black and white German Shorthaired Pointer. Ringo might be the smallest dog in the kennel but he has a heart as big as he is and it’s all hunt! He displays a sleek and sneaky hunting style. He’s an excellent pointer with superb bloodlines and a real treat to watch on a hunt. Although Ringo has had several chances to win big tournaments, it seems bad luck always finds him in the end. On several occasions while competing in the doubles pointer division with Darik and Dean, Ringo has really bailed them out (when their shooting wasn’t quite what it needed to be) by making two to three hundred yard retrieves. Thanks Ringo!! Ringo is available for stud service.

Tank. This three–year–old German Shorthaired Pointer was named for his size: He truly is a large dog. White with black tic marks, Tank has a stylish and showy hunting style. Don’t let his size fool you, though; he’s a puppy trapped in a big dog’s body. Excellent in pointing and very fast on his retrieves. He is also exceptional at finding down birds. Tank comes from excellent bloodlines. He is available for stud service.

Cash. Cash is three-year-old black and white German Wirehaired Pointer. He has a unique style and is an excellent pointer and retriever. Extremely high in energy and willing to hunt through most anything he has become known as the four wheel drive of our dogs. He is a very loveable dog and a real treat to watch while he’s hunting. As a pup about fifteen months old, Cash made it to the semi finals against some of the best dogs in the world at the 2007 Bird Dog Challenge (BDC) World Championship. He beat out eleven dogs in the last chance field by almost two minutes. Cash is available for stud service.

Scooter. This two-year-old Black Labrador Retriever is very calm and well mannered around everyone, but don’t let that fool you. It’s all business when he hits the field! He loves crashing through the cover and never seems to wear down. At eight months old, he went to Fly-N-Gun Kennels in Thorp WI to be trained by Craig Steinbach. He returned home as a fine tuned, hunting machine. Thanks Steiny, you once again did a first class job. Scooter comes from excellent parents who have both won several BDC titles. His mother placed in the Nationals and his father received “High Point Flusher of the Year” as well as winning the “World Championships” in 2009. Scooter had already started following in his parent’s footsteps when he was just a puppy. As with all of our dogs, Ringneck Retreat is proud to have Scooter as a part of the team.

C.J. (Dean’s Dog) Our veteran dog, C.J., is a nine–year–old Black Labrador Retriever. As an amazing retriever and great hunter, she has become a cherished member of the Ringneck Retreat family. CJ has worked very hard over her nine years, busting fields along with all of the Ringneck Retreat guides. She has retrieved more birds than any of us would care to count, but never has brought one to Darik (or anyone else for that matter), only to Dean. Still, it’s no wonder that Darik and Angie sneak a treat from the fridge for her once in a while. But we won’t tell Dean!

Mae (Dean’s Dog) Mae is the newest member of our elite team here at Ringneck Retreat. Nicknamed as a puppy, “Maybe I will or maybe I won’t”. This was soon changed after winning 1st place in the Puppy Flusher class on the first day of the 2009 Championship Dakota Outdoor Gundog Series (D.O.G.S.). Then, her first days in the field, she proved to us that it was to be “Yes I can and yes I will”. Only weighing in at 55 pounds and a pedigree that would make any dog breeder proud, she has shown that she can “Run with the big dogs”. With a small frame and huge heart, her Hot-Rod style shows no quit. We know that Mae will be a professional addition to Ringneck Retreat for many seasons to come. She is anxiously waiting to hunt, flush and retrieve for all guests spending time with us during the upcoming hunting seasons. Welcome aboard, Mae!
